Seek the Happiness of Traveller Pride
Irish Travellers are an ethnic minority who have been part of Irish society for centuries. Travellers come from a nomadic tradition, and have a distinct culture, which includes a separate language and long shared history.
This art quilt is a celebration of Traveller identity and pride. The theme of horses was chosen as a symbol of the cultural tradition of horse ownership in the Traveller community that dates back many generations, and as a link to the community's nomadic past. Today horse care skills are passed down within families and are a great source of pride and well being for Travellers.
Spring Lane Traveller Women's Group meet every week. The group is run by women living on Spring Lane site in Cork city and runs arts, health and leadership activities.
Mary Palmer is a multi-award winning textile artist who collaborated with the group for 3 months in 2018 to create the quilt.
This project was supported by the Cork Traveller Women's Network & exhibited with the support of the Cork University Hospital Arts & Health Programme.
